Translation of stanzas 1–3, and 5.

  1. Immanuel, we sing to thee,
    Pure source of life and love most free:
    Our light most fair, our morning star,
    Lord of all lords and lands afar.
  2. To thee with angel-hosts we sing,
    To thee our highest praise we bring:
    That thou, our long-expected Lord,
    Dost give to faith its bright reward.
  3. Lo! in the ages far away,
    The hearts of thine desir’d this day:
    This hope through ages did inspire
    Our fathers with divine desire.
  4. O that the Lord our bands would break,
    And bring us aid for Zion’s sake;
    When He to Zion shall descend,
    Then Israel’s joy shall know no end.
