Translation of stanzas 1–3, 6, and 20.
- Immanuel, to Thee we sing,
Of life and love th’ eternal Spring:
Thou Light of Heav’n, Thou Star of Morn,
Lord of all lords, yet virgin-born. - To Thee, with angel-hosts; we raise
Our noblest strains of grateful praise,
That Thou, our long expected Guest,
Hast deign’d with us on earth to rest. - Lo, in the ages far away,
Full many a heart desir’d this day:
For this in hope the Prophets yearn’d,
This Patriarchs old in faith discern’d. - And now, O Saviour, Thou art come,
The manger is Thy lowly home:
At Bethl’hem’s inn a stranger Thou,
Though all the heav’ns before Thee bow! - For this will we, to Thee our King,
Our joyful hallelujahs sing,
With angel-choirs who Thee adore
In realms of light for evermore.
